In true standing with southern tradition, every year (since well before I can remember) my grandmother would make cabbage, pork, and black-eyed peas for dinner on New Year’s day.

This was my interpretation: corned beef hash with pancetta and carmelized cabbage.

I wish the colors were brighter, but it definitely brought back memories.

I was given some leftover empanadas that my friend’s mother made. He brought them back from his Christmas trip home and froze them. In the few years that I’ve known him, I’ve made it a personal mission to not only improve his mother’s empanadas, but to uncover an appropriate reheating method in which we preserve the original integrity of such a wonderful snacky treat. Just look at them in their little
ziplock baggy…. little pockets of seasoned, meaty goodness.

A few college friends of mine started a web/art project a few years back called Project 365. They took a photo every day, documenting the ups, downs, and inspirations of the year.

I thought this was brilliant. No, it really is. Take a look:

I got to thinking: what if I documented everything that I ate, drank, cooked, and consumed over the coming year.

So, I did just that.

Happy 2010.
